Tips to Safely Buy A Used Car Online

Looking to buy a used car? Use common sense when shopping online. I have bought a couple used cars over the years, and there have been varying degrees of a positive outcome. Gone are the days of looking through the newspaper or auto trader magazine. Shopping online for cars is so much more efficient. You can shop many cars, many places, in a short amount of time. However, there are a few things to be cautious of.
One disadvantage to listing or buying a car online is that you also are subject to a lot of spam emails. When I posted my car on a local website recently, I got a lot of weird emails with people asking me to cash checks for them and give them the extra money, or pay to ship it to Louisiana and be compensated for my time. MAJOR WARNING SIGNS ARE FLASHING THROUGH MY HEAD when I read those.
There are a few things you can do to be safe and smart while shopping for a used car:
- Shop online, but buy in person.
- Get the car inspected by a professional
- Never send money online
- Make sure you get to speak to a real person. Don’t ONLY communicate through email.
- Ask lots of questions.
Mostly, do not feel pressure to buy now. There will be another car available. Trust your gut instinct. If it seems fishy, weird, or you are AT ALL uncomfortable, just wait.
